Why Bodmin
Bodmin is a practical and characterful base in the heart of Cornwall, well placed for exploring Bodmin Moor, the Camel Trail, Cardinham Woods and both the north and south coasts. It has a strong sense of history, with granite buildings, old streets and easy access to some of Cornwall’s best inland attractions.
Bodmin Jail is one of the town’s biggest draws, offering an atmospheric look at Cornwall’s darker past through immersive exhibits and historic prison buildings. For a gentler heritage experience, Bodmin Railway is a lovely way to step back in time, with vintage steam train journeys through the countryside.
Cardinham Woods is perfect for walking, cycling and family days out, with forest trails, picnic spots and peaceful woodland scenery. The Cardinham Woods Café is a great stop for coffee, cake or lunch after a walk. Nearby National Trust places add even more variety, with Lanhydrock standing out for its grand house, gardens, woodland trails and cycling routes.
For food, Native Burger is a strong choice in Bodmin for a relaxed, satisfying meal. Flory is another good town-centre option, ideal for a café-style stop, brunch or lunch. Cardinham Woods Café is especially handy if you are combining food with a walk in the woods.
Bodmin is best enjoyed as an inland Cornish base: history in the morning, woodland in the afternoon, then easy day trips towards the coast or moor.
