Charlestown

Charlestown is one of Cornwall’s most distinctive coastal villages, with a beautifully preserved harbour, tall ships, cobbled quays and views out across St Austell Bay. The harbour has recently undergone major restoration work, helping protect its historic lock gate and keep this much-loved maritime setting open and thriving for visitors.

The harbour is the heart of the village. It is perfect for a gentle wander, with old stone walls, traditional ships, small shops and plenty of photo-worthy corners. The beach sits just beside the harbour and is better for a scenic stroll, paddle or picnic than a full sandy beach day, as it is pebbly and tide-dependent.

Charlestown is also famous for its screen appearances, especially in Poldark, where its unspoilt Georgian character made it an ideal backdrop for period drama. Even without the cameras, it feels wonderfully cinematic.

Food and drink are a real highlight down by the harbour. The Longstore is a popular choice for steak, seafood and cocktails, while The Pier House offers harbour views and relaxed coastal dining. The Rashleigh Arms is another good option for a pub meal or drink close to the water, and seasonal harbour pop-ups often add extra choice in warmer months.

For walking, follow the South West Coast Path towards Carlyon Bay or Duporth for sea views, hidden coves and a lovely perspective back over the harbour.
