Why Downderry

Downderry is a relaxed coastal village on south east Cornwall’s quieter shore, set between Looe and Portwrinkle. It has a calm, understated feel, with sea views, narrow lanes and a beach that feels far less busy than many of Cornwall’s better-known resorts.

The beach is a mix of shingle, sand and rock, backed by cliffs and village cottages. At low tide, it opens up for walking, rock-pooling and exploring, with the option to stroll along the shore towards Seaton. It is more suited to peaceful beach time, paddling and coastal wandering than classic bucket-and-spade days, and tide times are worth checking.

Food and drink options are simple but appealing. The Inn on the Shore is the main village pub, offering sea views, drinks and relaxed meals close to the beach. Nearby Seaton also has cafés and casual places to eat, giving a little extra choice without needing to travel far.

Walking is one of Downderry’s best bits. Follow the South West Coast Path west towards Seaton and Looe, or east towards Portwrinkle and Whitsand Bay for wilder cliffs and big sea views. The area is ideal for visitors who want a slower, quieter Cornish stay.
