Why Fowey
Fowey is one of Cornwall’s most beautiful harbour towns, set on a steep hillside above the River Fowey estuary. It has a polished but characterful feel, with narrow streets, independent shops, galleries, cafés and glimpses of the water around almost every corner.
The harbour is the heart of the town, filled with sailing boats, ferries and working vessels. A short walk from the centre brings you to Readymoney Cove, a sheltered little beach that is perfect for a paddle, picnic or gentle swim on a calm day. Above it, St Catherine’s Castle adds a historic viewpoint across the estuary.
Food is a real highlight in Fowey, with everything from relaxed cafés and harbour pubs to special-occasion dining. Expect plenty of local seafood, waterside views and cosy places to linger after a walk. The town also has a lovely evening atmosphere, especially when the lights reflect across the river.
For walking, follow the South West Coast Path towards Gribbin Head for sea views, coves and du Maurier country, or take the ferry across to Polruan for a different perspective on the harbour. Fowey is best enjoyed slowly: browse the lanes, watch the boats, walk to Readymoney, then finish with dinner by the water.
