Why Hayle

Hayle is a relaxed west Cornwall town set beside the Hayle Estuary and the sweeping sands of St Ives Bay. It is a brilliant choice for beach lovers, walkers, wildlife watchers and families, with a more spacious, easy-going feel than nearby St Ives.

 

The beaches are the main attraction. Hayle Towans, Mexico Towans, Upton Towans and Gwithian form a huge stretch of golden sand backed by dunes, with views towards Godrevy Lighthouse. At low tide, the beach feels almost endless, perfect for long walks, surfing, sandcastle building and sunset watching.

The estuary adds another side to Hayle. It is an important wildlife area, especially for wading birds, and offers peaceful views that contrast beautifully with the open Atlantic beaches nearby.

For food, Philps Pasties is a Hayle institution and a must for a proper Cornish pasty, whether you are heading to the beach or walking the Towans. Travaskis is another standout, known for its farm shop, generous restaurant meals, homemade cakes and family-friendly feel. Salt is a great option for relaxed dining and drinks, adding a more contemporary choice to Hayle’s food scene. The town also has cafés, pubs, fish and chip shops and casual places to eat, making it easy to keep things simple after a day by the sea.

For walking, follow the coast towards Gwithian and Godrevy for dunes, surf and lighthouse views, or explore the estuary paths for a gentler route. Hayle is best enjoyed with space to roam: pasty first, beach walk next, then sunset over St Ives Bay.
