Why Helford
Helford is a peaceful riverside village on the south coast of Cornwall, known for its sailing waters, wooded creeks and gentle, tucked-away atmosphere. It feels far removed from Cornwall’s busier beach resorts, making it ideal for slow days, waterside walks and quiet exploring.
The river is the star here. At high tide, boats bob beside the village and the water feels wonderfully calm; at low tide, mudflats and birdlife give the estuary a completely different character. The seasonal passenger ferry across to Helford Passage is one of the loveliest ways to experience the river.
Food and drink are simple but memorable. The Shipwrights Arms sits right by the water and is the classic Helford stop for a relaxed meal, drink or post-walk pause with river views. Across the water, the Ferryboat Inn at Helford Passage is another excellent waterside option, especially on a sunny day.
For walking, follow the paths towards Frenchman’s Creek for woodland, water views and du Maurier atmosphere, or explore the coast path towards Dennis Head and Gillan Creek for a wilder, more open feel. Nearby Trebah and Glendurgan gardens also make beautiful additions to a Helford day out.
Helford is best enjoyed slowly: ferry across the river, walk the creeks, stop for lunch by the water, then linger as the tide changes.
