Why Helston

Helston is a historic market town on the edge of the Lizard Peninsula, well placed for exploring both coast and countryside. It has a practical, local feel, with independent shops, cafés, pubs and a strong sense of Cornish tradition.

The town’s best-known event is Flora Day, but Helston is worth visiting year-round. The Museum of Cornish Life gives a fascinating insight into local history, while Coronation Park and the boating lake offer a relaxed place for families to pause. Nearby, the National Trust’s Penrose Estate is excellent for walking, with trails leading through woodland and around Loe Pool, Cornwall’s largest natural freshwater lake.

Helston is also a great base for beach days. Porthleven is close by for harbour views, food and stormy seascapes, while the Lizard Peninsula offers Kynance Cove, Mullion, Coverack and Lizard Point within easy reach.

For food, Helston has a mix of cafés, pubs and casual places to eat, from traditional Cornish pasties to relaxed lunches and evening meals. It is also handy for self-catering supplies before heading out towards the coast.
