Launceston

Launceston is a historic market town in east Cornwall, close to the Devon border and often seen as one of the gateways into the county. It has a strong sense of history, with steep streets, independent shops, old town buildings and the castle rising above it all.

Launceston Castle is the main landmark. Set high on a natural mound, its ruins offer excellent views across the town and surrounding countryside. It is a great starting point for understanding Launceston’s past, from Norman power to Cornwall’s medieval administration.

The town also works well as a base for exploring. Bodmin Moor is nearby for wild landscapes, ancient stones and big skies, while the Tamar Valley offers gentler countryside, river views and heritage days out. Launceston is also home to the Launceston Steam Railway, a lovely family-friendly attraction with a nostalgic feel.

For food, Launceston has some strong local options. Native Burger is a great choice for a relaxed meal, serving proper burgers in a casual setting. Philip Warren is a standout for high-quality local meat and produce, ideal for picking up something special if you are self-catering. For a classic Cornish bite, Barnecutt’s is the place to go for a pasty, sweet treats or an easy lunch while exploring town.

Launceston is best enjoyed as a slower inland stay: castle views, town wandering, countryside drives and easy access to both Cornwall and Devon.
