Liskeard

Liskeard is a traditional south-east Cornwall market town, well placed for exploring Bodmin Moor, the Tamar Valley, Looe and the wider countryside. It is less touristy than Cornwall’s coastal hotspots, making it a practical and characterful base for walkers, families and visitors who want easy access to both coast and moor.

The town itself has independent shops, cafés, historic buildings and a useful local feel. It is a good place to pause, browse and stock up before heading out into the countryside or down to the coast.

One of the best nearby highlights is Golitha Falls, a beautiful wooded valley on the edge of Bodmin Moor. The walk follows the River Fowey through ancient woodland, with rushing water, mossy rocks and peaceful paths. It is especially atmospheric after rain, though sturdy footwear is useful as the ground can be uneven.

For food, Inkie’s Smokehouse at Golitha Falls is a standout option, known for barbecue-style food in a relaxed woodland setting. Or if it’s a traditional Cornish inn you’re after head to The Crows Nest in nearby Darite. In Liskeard itself, you will also find cafés,  bakeries (we love Malcolm Barnecutt’s) and casual places to eat, making it easy to keep things simple before or after a day exploring.

Liskeard is best enjoyed as a countryside base: wander the town, walk at Golitha Falls, explore Bodmin Moor, then head to Looe or Polperro for a coastal day out.
