Mevagissey

Mevagissey is a charming south coast fishing village, known for its twin harbour, steep narrow streets, colourful boats and traditional Cornish character. It has a lively but old-fashioned feel, with independent shops, galleries, cafés and plenty of places to pause and watch harbour life unfold.

The harbour is the heart of the village. It is perfect for a gentle wander, crabbing with children, browsing small shops or simply sitting with fish and chips while the boats come and go. Boat trips also run from Mevagissey, including seasonal trips across St Austell Bay towards Fowey, giving a lovely view of the coastline from the water.

Food is a big part of the Mevagissey experience, with traditional pubs, tearooms, seafood spots, pasties and classic harbour fish and chips. It is the kind of place where simple food suits the setting best: something fresh, local and eaten close to the water.

For walking, follow the South West Coast Path towards Pentewan for sea views, wooded valleys and a wider sandy beach, or head the other way towards Chapel Point and Gorran Haven for a quieter, more rugged coastal route. Mevagissey is best enjoyed slowly: harbour first, narrow lanes next, then a coastal walk or boat trip before dinner by the water.

This south coast is steeped in history, and a visit to Wheal Martyn Clay Works gives an insight into Cornwall’s industrial past. Nearby, the Lost Gardens of Heligan offer a completely different kind of heritage, with restored Victorian gardens, woodland walks and subtropical planting just a short distance from Mevagissey. Poldark fans will also be familiar with the harbour village of Charlestown, slightly east of Mevagissey. This small Georgian harbour has regularly been used as a filming location for one of TV’s favourite programmes.
