Penzance

Penzance is one of west Cornwall’s most characterful towns, set on the edge of Mount’s Bay with views towards St Michael’s Mount. It has a lively, lived-in feel, mixing seaside charm with galleries, independent shops, historic streets and a strong creative community.

The seafront is a major part of its appeal. Walk along the promenade for big views across the bay, stop at Jubilee Pool for a swim, or continue towards Newlyn and Mousehole for a longer coastal stroll. The town also makes a great base for exploring Marazion, Land’s End, St Ives and the wilder Penwith coast.

Food and drink options are varied, with cafés, pubs, bakeries, seafood spots and relaxed restaurants throughout the town. The Shore Restaurant is a standout for a special meal, with a focus on fresh, local seafood and seasonal produce. For something casual, Loafs Bakery is a great stop for a pasty, coffee or baked treat while exploring town. The Pirates Rest Fish and Chips is another easy choice for classic fish and chips, perfect after a walk along the promenade or a day by the sea.

For culture, visit Penlee House Gallery and Museum, explore Morrab Gardens, browse the shops around Causewayhead, or catch a performance at the Acorn Theatre. Penzance is less polished than some Cornish resorts, but that is part of its charm.

Penzance is best enjoyed as a proper west Cornwall base: swim in the lido, wander the promenade, explore the old streets, eat well, then watch the evening light fall across Mount’s Bay.
