Polzeath

Polzeath is one of north Cornwall’s best-loved beach villages, known for its broad sandy bay, reliable Atlantic swell and relaxed surf-town feel. It is especially popular with families and beginner surfers, thanks to its wide beach, surf schools, hire shops and seasonal RNLI lifeguard cover. Dogs are not allowed on the beach from 15 May to 30 September between 10am–6pm. At low tide, the beach opens into a huge sweep of sand, with rock pools around the edges and plenty of room for children to play. At high tide, space can become more limited, so it is worth checking tide times before planning a full beach day.

Food options are much more central to Polzeath than at some smaller coves. There are cafés, pubs and casual places to eat close to the beach, making it easy to grab breakfast, coffee, fish and chips, ice cream or a post-surf meal without leaving the village. The Oystercatcher is one well-known option nearby, especially handy after a coastal walk.

For walking, Polzeath is superb. A short stroll north takes you towards New Polzeath and Pentireglaze Haven, while a longer route follows the South West Coast Path around Pentire Point and The Rumps, with big sea views, wildlife, ancient earthworks and dramatic cliff scenery. For a more ambitious day, continue towards Port Quin or Port Isaac along one of Cornwall’s most memorable coastal stretches.

Polzeath is also a beautiful sunset spot, particularly at low tide when the wet sand reflects the evening light across the bay. For the best views, stay on the beach as the sun drops, or walk up towards New Polzeath or Pentire Point for a higher vantage point over the Atlantic.

Polzeath is also close to the luxury golf course at the St Enodoc. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, a round of golf here comes with stunning scenery followed by post game drinks in their beautiful clubhouse. This course is one of the best in Cornwall and it is easy to see why it is a favoured fairway.
