Porthleven

Porthleven is a characterful fishing town on Cornwall’s south coast, known for its historic harbour, big sea views and growing reputation as one of the county’s best foodie spots. It has a lively but authentic feel, with working boats, independent shops, galleries and plenty of harbour-side atmosphere.

The harbour is the heart of Porthleven. On calm days, it is perfect for a gentle wander, watching boats and sitting by the water. In rough weather, the sea can be dramatic, but it should always be admired from a safe distance, as waves can be extremely powerful.

Food is a real highlight here. Kota Kai is a standout choice, now bringing together the much-loved Kota name with a relaxed harbour-side setting and a menu that blends refined cooking with a more informal, family-friendly feel. The Mussel Shoal is great for casual seafood by the water, The Ship Inn is a classic choice for a drink or pub meal with sea views, and Porthleven Fish and Chips is ideal for something simple after a coastal walk. In fact, food is so celebrated here that there’s an annual food festival which takes place each May.

For walking, follow the South West Coast Path west towards Loe Bar and the Penrose Estate, or east towards Rinsey for quieter cliffs and open sea views. Porthleven is best enjoyed slowly: harbour first, food next, then a bracing walk along the coast.
