Porthtowan

Porthtowan is a lively north coast beach village with a big sandy beach, strong Atlantic character and a laid-back surf feel. At low tide, the sand opens out beautifully, giving plenty of room for families, beach games and long shoreline walks. When the swell is running, it is also one of the area’s better-known surf spots, though the waves can be powerful, so it is best to swim or surf between the lifeguard flags when cover is in place.

For walking, Porthtowan is excellent. Head north on the South West Coast Path towards Chapel Porth for a spectacular clifftop route, with old mining remains, sea views and a rewarding cove at the end. Continue further towards St Agnes Head and Wheal Coates for one of Cornwall’s most iconic mining landscapes. In the other direction, the coast path towards Portreath offers wilder cliffs and big Atlantic views.

Food and drink are part of Porthtowan’s appeal. The Blue Bar is the standout beachside choice, known for its relaxed atmosphere and sea views, while The Unicorn sits close to the beach and is handy for a casual meal or drink after a swim or walk. There are also simple café and takeaway options in the village, making it easy to spend the whole day by the sea without needing to drive elsewhere.

Porthtowan is also a brilliant sunset spot. Its west-facing beach catches the evening light beautifully, especially at low tide when the wet sand reflects the sky. Stay for golden hour with fish and chips, or climb the cliffs for a wider view over the bay.
