Why Saltash

Saltash is a historic riverside town in south east Cornwall, set on the banks of the River Tamar just across from Plymouth. It is often the first Cornish town visitors reach when arriving by road or rail, but it is worth more than a passing glance.

The waterfront is one of Saltash’s best features, with views across the Tamar, the Royal Albert Bridge and the Tamar Bridge. It is a lovely spot for a gentle stroll, photography or simply watching boats and trains move across the river.

The town has a practical, local feel, with shops, cafés, pubs and useful amenities. For food, The Union Inn is a traditional choice close to the waterside, while Just Be Coffee Wine Lounge is a good option for coffee, brunch or a relaxed drink. Nearby farm shops and pubs around the Tamar Valley also add extra choice.

Saltash is well placed for exploring the Tamar Valley, Antony, Cotehele and Mount Edgcumbe, as well as quick trips into Plymouth. Walkers can enjoy riverside routes, nearby woodland paths and countryside trails with big estuary views.

Saltash is best enjoyed as a gateway with depth: bridges, river views, local food, heritage and easy access to both Cornwall and Devon.
