Why St Ives

St Ives is one of Cornwall’s most iconic seaside towns, combining golden beaches, a working harbour, cobbled lanes, galleries, independent shops and a lively food scene. It has a beautiful but busy feel, especially in summer, so it is best explored slowly and on foot.

The beaches are a major highlight. Porthmeor is the surf beach, backed by Tate St Ives and popular for Atlantic waves and sunsets. Porthminster is gentler, with soft sand and views across the bay, while Harbour Beach sits right in the centre of town. Porthgwidden is smaller and sheltered, ideal for a quieter pause.

Art and culture are central to St Ives. Tate St Ives overlooks Porthmeor Beach, while the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden offers a peaceful look at one of the town’s most important creative figures.

Food is one of St Ives’ big pleasures. Porthmeor Beach Café is a standout for seafood, small plates and sunset views overlooking the surf. The Loft is a great choice for relaxed dining in the heart of town, with a menu focused on local ingredients. For something casual, St Ives Bakery is perfect for pasties, pastries, coffee and beach-day treats.

For walking, follow the coast path towards Carbis Bay for a scenic, fairly easy route, or head west towards Zennor for a much wilder and more challenging clifftop walk.

St Ives is best enjoyed as a mix of beach, art, food and wandering: swim in the morning, browse galleries in the afternoon, then watch the sun set over Porthmeor.
