Tintagel

Tintagel is one of north Cornwall’s most atmospheric villages, known for its Arthurian legends, rugged cliffs and spectacular sea views. The castle is the main draw, with ruins spread across the mainland and island, linked today by a striking footbridge. It is a magical place to explore, but the paths are steep and exposed, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.

Below the castle, Tintagel Haven is a small, rocky beach that appears at lower tides. It is more of an exploring spot than a classic beach day destination, with caves, rock pools and dramatic scenery. Merlin’s Cave is the highlight, but it should only be visited when the tide is safely out.

Food options in the village are good for a day out. King Arthur’s Arms is a central pub and inn serving traditional meals, or head to The Big Fish and enjoy the seaside classic fish and chips after visiting the castle. There are also cafés, pubs and tearooms around the village for cream teas, lunches and simple takeaway options.

Tintagel has lots of gift shops and perhaps the most well known of these is the Tintagel Pottery Studio, opened in 1948 and producing unique pottery ever since which is collected by enthusiasts all over the world.

Walking is one of Tintagel’s best bits. Follow the South West Coast Path towards Bossiney and Rocky Valley for dramatic cliffs and wild scenery, or head towards Trebarwith Strand for a longer coastal route with big Atlantic views. Tintagel is best enjoyed slowly: castle first, cave at low tide, fish and chips in the village, then a windswept clifftop walk.
