Why Torpoint
Torpoint is a practical waterside town in south east Cornwall, set on the Rame Peninsula just across the Tamar from Plymouth. It is often used as a gateway to Cornwall, but it also makes a useful base for exploring some of the county’s quieter coastal corners.
The ferry is central to Torpoint’s identity. Crossing between Torpoint and Devonport, it offers easy access to Plymouth while keeping the town closely connected to the wider Rame Peninsula. From here, visitors can reach beaches, woodland, historic estates and scenic villages within a short drive.
Nearby Antony is one of the area’s key highlights, with Antony House and its gardens offering a peaceful National Trust day out. Mount Edgcumbe Country Park is also close by, with parkland, coastal paths, sea views and ferry links across to Plymouth. For beach time, head towards Cawsand, Kingsand, Whitsand Bay or Tregantle for a more dramatic south east Cornwall coastline.
Torpoint has a local, everyday feel, with shops, cafés, pubs and takeaway options. For more choice, nearby Cawsand, Kingsand and Plymouth offer waterside pubs, restaurants and cafés.
Walking is excellent across the wider peninsula, from Mount Edgcumbe’s wooded paths to the coast path around Rame Head and Whitsand Bay.
