Watergate Bay

Watergate Bay is one of north Cornwall’s most impressive beaches, just outside Newquay, with golden sand backed by high cliffs and open Atlantic views. It has a big, elemental feel: wide skies, rolling surf and huge stretches of sand at low tide.

The beach is especially popular with surfers, families, walkers and dog owners. It is known for consistent waves and a lively surf-school scene, though the sea can be powerful, so it is best to swim or surf between the lifeguard flags when cover is in place. Dogs are welcome on the beach all year, which makes it a strong choice for a coastal break with a four-legged companion.

Watergate Bay is also one of the key locations for Boardmasters Festival, which brings surf, music and a lively summer atmosphere to this stretch of coast each year.

Food and drink are a big part of the Watergate Bay experience. There are beachside cafés and restaurants close to the sand, making it easy to warm up after a surf, linger over lunch or enjoy a relaxed drink with sea views. The Beach Hut and The Living Space are well-known options within the Watergate Bay Hotel setting.

For walking, follow the South West Coast Path south towards Porth and Newquay, or north towards Mawgan Porth for dramatic cliffs, sea views and a proper taste of the north coast. Watergate Bay is best enjoyed with time to spare: surf, walk, eat, then stay for the evening light over the Atlantic.
