Activities
Fistral Beach is the big name in this part of Cornwall, and it more than lives up to the hype. With its wide sweep of sand, Atlantic drama and rolling waves, it’s a brilliant place for everything from early-morning walks to lazy afternoons watching the surf. It’s also a hub for anyone keen to get on the water, with a strong surf culture and plenty of opportunities to learn or level up. Even if you’re staying firmly on dry land, it’s a fantastic spot to soak up the atmosphere with a coffee in hand and the sound of the sea in the background.
The food scene around Fistral is a real part of the experience too. You’ll find plenty of places for a relaxed breakfast, a beachside lunch or a sunset dinner, with menus that make the most of fresh local produce. Think casual bites after a salty swim, cocktails as the sky changes colour, and those “let’s make a night of it” meals that feel like a proper holiday treat. If you’re craving a little indulgence beyond the beach, you’re also well placed for pampering – both Fistral Spa and the Headland Spa are nearby and perfect for a few hours of pure switch-off time, whether that’s a swim, sauna session or a treatment.
Beyond Fistral, Newquay is packed with excellent beaches and is widely considered a surfing mecca. Towan, Lusty Glaze, Tolcarne and Great Western are all popular choices, with a more sheltered feel that suits swimming and traditional beach days. For something a little different, Watergate Bay is a favourite for kitesurfing and windsurfing, and there are plenty of other sea adventures on offer too, including kayaking, coasteering and surf rafting. If you’d rather escape the main hotspots, Polly Joke is well worth the trip: a beautiful, tucked-away cove that feels wonderfully peaceful, especially in spring when the surrounding cliffs are alive with bright red poppies.
There’s more here than beaches, too. The South West Coast Path offers spectacular clifftop walking, while The Japanese Garden provides a calm alternative with bonsai, pagodas and reflective ponds. Trenance Gardens is another lovely option for a slower day outdoors.
For families, Newquay Zoo is a great day out, set in sub-tropical lakeside gardens and home to a range of endangered species. The Blue Reef Aquarium – with its impressive shark tunnel—is ideal when the weather turns. Add in Newquay’s lively mix of cafés, restaurants and beach bars, and you’ve got plenty to enjoy on and off the sand, whatever the forecast.
